Photography Divas from Hell

Not that I watch American Idol, but I’ve seen a few of the beginning-of-the-season episodes.  You know the ones:  full of a mixture of idiots who’ve been told by their mommy that they can sing and they stupidly believe it, and the people who want their 15 minutes and purposely act like idiots in the hope of immortalizing their idiocy.  Well my friends, I have a feeling that the folks in my photography class lie somewhere in that first category in my very own Photography Idol.  From listening to these people, THEY should be teaching the class.  Seriously, if you’ve taken 10 photography classes, and you have your own wedding photography business (which I highly suspect really means you took pictures for your sister’s wedding because she was too cheap to hire a real photographer), then WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING IN AN INTRO TO PHOTOGRAPHY CLASS?!  It appears that I’m one of 3 people in a class of 20 who truly expects to learn how to use a camera and how to compose pictures.  The other 17 people nodded their heads to everything the teacher said as if they already knew everything being said.  Seriously.  Shut up.

So a few pics of the firefighter picnic this last weekend.  The picnic was at McCormick Railroad Park in Scottsdale.  I remember this park from when I was a kid.  There’s a great tiny steam engine train that you can pay $1 to ride around the whole park.  There’s also this whole playground that looks like an Old West town.  It used to look a LOT bigger.  Ryan’s work rented out a huge area, and they served BEER, which is shocking considering the department hates parting with money.  Some pics:

Start ‘em young:

That last one is of Ryan and his guys getting their butts whooped by the recruits.  That’s Ryan upfront.

OK, its 10:41 and Project Runway has 20 minutes left them I’m off to bed.  Love ya!

if i may be so bold as to make a suggestion, when you buy a lens, try and get one that allows you to set the f-stop (apperture) as low as possible. that would have helped with the pic of the kid up there, by compressing the depth of field on him and blurring the surroundings. nice composition of the train. curved lines are good. get lower ;)

is he getting started early drinking or recycling?

    good start =)

The photography class must be working, because you took some great pictures! I particularly like the one of the kid. :)

That was how things were in the cooking class I took. Pretty annoying. I mean, I get that you might already know some of the stuff..but that’s no reason to get all "poindexter" on everyone..

Heh, I still just love that one of the kid :)

  6. Great photographs!! I especially love the one of the train! Michele sent me tonight, and I’m glad I found your blog :) And I am so completely, utterly jealous of your new entertainment center *drool* I mean that sincerely. LOL Anyway, keep up the great work on both your blog and your photography!!

Cin can totally relate - she’s an aspiring photographer, and has run into the same morons in the intro classes she’s taken.

Great blog - love your camera work. Here from Michele’s!

Uh oh. This post is too wierd. I just posted about the fact that I just bought myself a brand new fun camera and am taking my first class this week and you have me scared now. I can’t wait to learn as much as I can and try cool things out but I hope the know it all’s stay home or are out taking some professional photos for thier "business" haha.

  12. Good for you for taking the class! I think that you will get more out of the class than the knowitall Divas. I’ve always thought that your photos skills were pretty good…and that pic of the kid is adorable!
I made the mistake of hiring my friend to take our wedding photos…I would have to say that she would definitely fit in with your definition of Photography Diva. She had taken a photography course, and since she was coming to the wedding I thought I would ask her to take some photos with her equipment. What I discovered was, that she really didn’t know how to use her equipment because more than half of the photos were blurry, red-eyed throwaways. When I asked her to take some photos of the wedding, she went and registered as a small business. She now fancies herself as a wedding photographer! Sheesh…what was I thinking?
Here via Michele’s, but you know I’m a regular!

  16. These pictures are wonderful! You are on your way to GREAT Pictures!!!

Thanks for stopping by my blog and the lovely comment…MARCH OF THE PENGUINS does have some difficult things to watch if you are sensitive to bad things happening to living creatures, which you are, as am I…but YES, it is very very worth going through these ‘difficult’ times with the Penguins because it makes you appreciate them just that much more…It is very much worth it!
