Blog from my other home

I’m in Flagstaff right now.  Gorgeous, peace-loving, friendly, good food, stellar music, autumn leaves Flagstaff.

I am currently taking notes for a meeting with the students of the Mechanical Engineering department.  I get to meet with the students twice a year to see if they feel the University is doing a good job teaching them.  And I get paid to do it.  It is the best part of my job!

The great thing about a University is that someone nearby always has a wireless connection to mooch off of.  :-)

I’ll be up here sucking in the mountain air until tomorrow and the Internet connection at my hotel is miserable, so I’ll catch up with you more this weekend!

  1. I haven’t had much time this week to catch up on your entries, but this weekend, I am going to blog-heaven and am hanging for or a while. Oh! I think a few days back you mentioned knitting. Check out Crazy Aunt Purl. She’s pretty funny, and also just started knitting!

That’s an amazing job. How do they generally respond? I was talking with one of my co-students (teehee, I made up a word) this weekend, and we decided that McGill’s education is entirely too theory based. They’re basically breeding researchers, PhD/Master’s candidates, and not really educating us to be engineers. So when we get into the work world, we don’t know the software tools (they finally got Pro/E, but still don’t have Catia), we’ve learned how to derive high math but can’t pick an appropriate bolt to hold together two sheets of metal, and know things like compressible fluid flow but don’t know the basics of design for manufacture. It’s really frustrating, especially for someone like me who is very practical. Solving real problems, I can do, but deriving Nusselt numbers and fifty heat transfer correlations and understanding unstarting? Not really necessary in your standard engineering job.

Did I just rant? I think I ranted. Sorry. Anyway, I’m glad to hear YOUR University gives a crap what the students think!!

  3. Hi there! Michele sent me and I’m glad she did! You sound like a really interesting person. I’m going to spend some time browsing around. Hope you have a relaxing weekend!

Last Girl on Earth is absolutely right: your blog is such a great read. I’ve been noodling around the site for the last 10 minutes, and I’m addicted. Keep writing. Please.

    Dropped in from Michele’s tonight.
