Don’t Drink and Drive
I hate to get serious on my blog, but people, this has got to stop. When I was in high school, my school was actually mentioned on CNN as the ‘doomed class’. That’s because in the time I was there, we had FOUR people in my graduating class killed by drunk drivers. In separate accidents. When I was a Junior in high school, a car carrying kids from my school was going to a bowling alley after a school dance. I was supposed to be part of the group that met them at the alley, but when my date and I got about a mile from the bowling alley, the roads were all blocked off and we could see emergency lights up ahead. We didn’t know that they were for people we knew, and that one of them had died, one was put into a very long coma and has never had a full recovery, and yet another was so broken that she was in a coma and woke up to a halo brace drilled into her skull.
My senior year of high school a car carrying four students was turning into the street of one of their homes. A guy who had turned 21 that same day ran into them going 50+ in a 25mph zone. Ruth from my Shakespeare class died instantly, as did Jeremy (who was the first boy ever to ask me to dance at a school dance. I promptly hid in the bathroom. Hey, we were like 13!), and Brandon, who I used to walk home with after school, died in his front yard. Their friend from another school was also killed.
A guy I graduated college with was killed by a drunk driver a few weeks ago. You can read about him here. He was so young and happy! Do you really think that one night of having a little too much fun is worth taking him out of this world?
My husband and I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS take turns driving. Is it really that hard to do? Carpool with other people if you’re going somewhere and take turns on who’s the DD. There is so much life to be had, and there’s so many nights for drinking, you’re not going to miss out if you don’t drink for ONE NIGHT. Take a cab for crying out loud. Compare the cost of a cab ride to the cost of being in jail the rest of your life, or possibly losing your life. Can you imagine the changed perspective of the guy who killed Powell? I imagine he looks back and thinks, “It would have been so easy to make a different decision…” Make the right decision before its too late.
I have to agree with you. I made the mistake of driving one night and it scared the shit out of me. Never agin. It is so much cheaper to take a cab if you dont have a driver. My husband has had 2 DUIs and trust me! its cheaper to take a cab then pay lawyer fees! or even worse.. kill or injure another human!
I feel really strongly about this..Its so funny how some people have such a casual attitude about it too. They feel like this law doesnt apply to them because they "cant get drunk" or alcohol doesnt affect them, or whatever. Im sure all those people, whose drunk driving killed people we knew, had the same kind of casual thoughts about drunk driving before they had their accidents too.
Im sorry to hear about your friends..I had a friend who was killed in a brutal way (suicide) and it still affects me greatly after several years. You hear about this stuff everyday on the news, but its nothing until it hits close to home and invades our "safe circles"…
